You will write a 500- to 750-word (two- to three-page) essay based on assigned in-class readings and reputable outside sources.
You will do research on the assigned topic listed below and develop a thesis, which you will prove with the use of primary and secondary sources. A really good paper will not simply be descriptive; you should pose an analytical question and use your sources to answer it.
Topic
For this paper, you will select one of the classical-era writers from your reader. You will do background research on the writer and use what you have learned about his philosophy to explain how he would respond to a major philosophical question, which will be assigned to you.
“What is the ideal political system?” or “What responsibilities do citizens owe the state?”
Formatting
All of your papers should be double spaced, with one-inch margins, in 10- or 12-point type.
You must include endnotes and a bibliography, both in Chicago style. Chicago instructions include two different types of citations, notes and parenthetical references, and that you must use the note style.
Sources
To write your papers, you must use your assigned textbook and primary source material from the authors you have chosen to focus on, as well as at least one reputable outside source that is not assigned as part of the class reading. This source should be a full-length article from a peer-reviewed journal (that can be accessed through an online database) or an academic book. Encyclopedias and websites do not count and should not be used as sources of information for college-level papers. You should also avoid hobby websites and other informal postings, including blogs.

Finally, emphasis will be on the Roman Empire and its legacy to the Western world in terms of literature, religion, law, engineering, and government.
