Rio’s “Translating Translation: Finding a Beginning” has centered on the key terms “translation” (literally “to transfer”), manners vs. matters (or “how” vs. “what,” to use another pair of Rio’s words), understanding/ misunderstanding, and “engagement.” As a reader of Rio, I find the last one these four terms to be the most important. At the same time, I assume that each of the earlier three terms or concepts can not only be viewed in the same way, it can also be established as the central or the most significant point of Rio’s essay.
This assignment asks you to take one of these or if possible some other positions (e.g. good vs. bad manners, the use of binoculars as a metaphor to represent “the duality of language” or a bilingual situation, or what again seems to me the most significant one in the essay: mechanical engagement exemplified in the essay by the binocular, computer, and the book as opposed to human engagement such as the one that takes place between the author and the school boy or his mom and the Mexican workers etc.). I encourage you to first state as clearly as possible your view or position as a thesis, which doesn’t have to be about the Rio essay only, and can very well take the Bambara “short story” into consideration too. I also caution you to provide some framing before your arrive at your thesis in the first or second paragraph, instead of simply stating the thesis as, say, “I find Rio’s views on engagement to be the most significant ones in the essay” or the like.
Whether your thesis statement directly touches Bambara’s “The Lesson” or not, please make sure that your essay identifies at least two possible points of comparison (or yet engagement, if you will) that can be established between the two texts.
