Short Essay 1 Question: Write an essay comparing and contrasting the colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts (and hence the differences that were already emerging in what would become the South and North of the United States). 2 to 3 pages of work.

Spanish power prevented other nations from establishing colonies in North America during the sixteenth century. The English, also seeking the Northwest Passage to Asia, often raided Spanish vessels and ports. In 1588, the British defeat of the Spanish Armada opened the possibilities of North American settlement. Experiencing economic upheaval and overcrowding, private businessmen in England developed joint-stock companies as a way to finance colonization schemes on the mainland. In 1607, the Virginia Company of London established a colony on the James River.
Disease and tribal warfare led to a large majority of the Native American population’s demise. As a result, the Puritans spread quickly across New England. As a contentious group of people, a number of Puritans dissented from orthodoxy and challenged the fundamentals of authority. Individuals such as Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were banished for their outspokenness. Puritans are often stereotypically characterized as dull, harsh, joyless, fundamentalist, and unfeeling. To the contrary, they danced, sang, drank, and enjoyed other worldly pleasures – within moderation. Puritans believed in predestination, and they were largely intolerant toward Quakers and other religious groups.
Issues for consideration:
• survival strategies in the Chesapeake;
• tobacco as a profitable crop;
• development of servile systems of labor.
• religious dissention;
• the contrasting nature of the society and economy of England’s West Indian holdings and those on the mainland.
Short Essay 1, you are required to compare and contrast conditions in two colonies during the 17th century (1600s). For example, compare and contrast conditions (religious, political, economic, race, ethnicity, social, etc.) in two separate colonies during the 17th century. As tempting as it sounds, I ask that you be creative and try not to do the obvious comparison between Virginia and Massachusetts. Try to explore the conditions between Maryland versus South Carolina or Pennsylvania versus New York.
Short Essay 2 is the same as above, but focuses on conditions during the 18th. Please let me know if you require any additional assistance. For your second essay you should focus on conditions during the 18th century (1700s). 2 to 3 pages of work.
