1020 Essay 3: Comparing Movies
Comparisons are most interesting when they concentrate on differences or similarities that are not obvious. For example, McDonald’s and Burger King seem the same to many people, but by showing the differences, you could argue one is better than the other. On the other hand, most people would not think of Snoop Dogg and Kenny Chesney as being similar, but with a few points of comparison, you could argue they are similar. In this case, you would not argue one is better than the other. It is enough of an argument to show that they are similar.
For this assignment, you will compare and contrast two movies from the topic list.
You will need to come up with at least four points of comparison that you can apply consistently to each topic.
Your paper should be arranged by block or point-by-point, as you see fit. Your paper must revolve around a claim, with the points of comparison serving as support for that claim.
Your claim must meet the topic requirement, as explained on the following page. Failure to have an appropriate claim for this paper will result in a failing grade.

Topic Reqirement:
Choose two movies from the same category. If you want to write about a movie not on the list that fits with a category, or you want to write about two movies not on this list for a new category, you must approve this with me first.
Your claim should center around the two movies’ messages on their category. You can show how the two movies convey similar messages or how their messages contrast. Consider what these movies say about the topic as it pertains to our society or human nature in general. Consider who their audiences are. Do they have a purpose in mind?
Your claim should not be a shallow comparison, but should seek to prove something about how our society thinks, works, or changes. Your claim might involve saying one is better than the other, pertaining to society in general or their messages to the audience, but this is not necessary.
