The aim of this paper is for you to identify a common theme across three different works. This is NOT a compare and contrast essay. Instead, you will be identifying a particular theme that several works share and examining how (and why) the authors portray that theme the way that they choose to do. You will also be charged with incorporating research into this paper, by including at least one peer-reviewed article into your argument as support for your argument.
Step 1: Identify the three works that you believe has a common theme.
Remember that a theme is a moral, a lesson, or an idea that the work presents. It’s the “meaning,” so to speak, or what you believe the author wants you to take away from the work.
To identify three works that you believe have a similar theme, you might begin by asking yourself what works seem to have something in common. It might be the way the characters are presented or the plotline or a major symbol. Whatever the commonality, that common link might be a way to examine whether or not something has a common theme.
You are not at all restricted to genre here. You may choose one poem, one story, and one play or any combination of those things. I would prefer that you choose at least two different genres to work with (i.e. don’t choose three poems, three stories, or three plays to work with) because it will give you more to discuss.
Step 2: Look at the ways that the authors choose to portray the theme differently.
This is the fun part. I sincerely doubt that each author discuss the theme the same way. Instead, one author might choose to use symbolism to portray the theme while another might choose to use particular word choices to convey the meaning. Another might choose to use a character to embody the theme, while another author might use a particular plot to demonstrate the meaning of the work.
Your task is to show how (and why) authors choose to portray the theme the way that they do. In this sense, you must analyze the reasons behind this portrayal. If you are looking at symbols used, you need to show why the author chose that symbol to portray that theme. What particular effect does it have on the overall work? on the reader? on the theme?
Step 3: Research, using the library databases, to find supporting information for your argument.
You must incorporate research into this paper. You should have experience researching using the library’s databases. Specifically, you need to find peer-reviewed articles that support your argument. Journals that focus on literature will be your best bet, of course, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding some analyses of the works that we have read, especially the more famous ones.
