You are to write a 3- 4 page paper, double-spaced with page numbers, indented paragraphs with no extra lines between them, observing all the rules of good grammar, etc., using the assigned document which relates to the period under consideration. Documents are important to the study of history because they give readers a contemporary view of the events and/or feelings about a period being studied. Historians and people in general use documents to discuss, to interpret, and to write about the past as well as contemporary happenings.
Assignment #1 is a comparison of two documents: “Martin Luther: The Jews and Their Lies” and “The Nazi Party Platform, 1920”. Read these documents and answer the following questions:
• How are these two documents similar?
• How are these two documents different?
• What actions are demanded to solve the Jewish or Non-Citizen problem/threat?
• From other sources; what happened to the Jews under Martin Luther and under the Third Reich?
Your paper should have an introductory paragraph, which contains a thesis statement. There should be at least one paragraph on each of the questions.
Then write another paragraph in which you relate your answers to the present year. Finally, your last paragraph should be a summary or conclusion of your findings.
To put it basically, you introduce your subject and you tell me what you are going to do, you do it; and then you tell me you have done it.
In general a paragraph should consist of at least three sentences with subjects and verbs which agree, all written in the same tense, and contains clauses which add to the development of the ideas being expressed. You should have at least 7 quotes in the paper and 5 must be from the documents, and they should be cited in footnote form at the bottom of the page. You will need a bibliography as well. For bibliography and footnote forms, follow the Chicago manual of style (CMS) which can be found on-line.
