The purpose of the final assignment is to integrate the course material into one coherent paper. You will be expected to write a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a movie character from a bio-psycho-social, social work perspective, incorporating a discussion of ecological and systems theory concepts, as well as theories of personality and development, and postmodern theories.
1. Watch the Movie:
Begin the assignment by selecting and viewing one of the three movie options listed at the end of this hand out.
2. Case Description:
Start the paper with a succinct, but adequate, case description. Your case write-up should describe the main character, his/her background and current situation, focusing on a difficulty in social and/or psychological functioning that the person is experiencing. Use the case descriptions distributed in class for the Midterm Exam as a guide for what sorts of information should be included and how to organize the description. This section should be approximately 2-3 pages in length.
3. Comprehensive Theoretical Analysis:
Provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the character’s functioning, drawing on those theories which you think are most helpful in understanding this person and his/her situation from a social work perspective. Since social work takes a bio-psycho-social, person-in-environment approach to understanding human behavior and psychosocial functioning, you should consider the following questions in developing this section of the paper:
• What bio-psycho-social factors are important to consider?
• What systems and ecological concepts are relevant for understanding this person’s functioning?
• Which personality, learning, and alternative theory concepts are most helpful to you in explaining this person’s situation?
• Which developmental theory seems most relevant?
To ensure that you are evaluated at some point in the semester on your knowledge of theories across all of the course modules, you must incorporate a discussion of theoretical concepts from each of the theory areas listed on the syllabus:
• Area 1: Systems and Ecological Theory
• Area 2 –Psychodynamic Theories (Psychoanalytic, Ego Psychology, Object Relations, Attachment Theory)
• Area 3 – Learning Theories (Cognitive theory, Behavioral Theory, Social Learning Theory, Moral Development)
• Area 4 – Alternative and Post-modern Theories (Empowerment Theory, Conflict Theory, Critical Race Theory).
Select theories and concepts within each of these modules that seem the most appropriate to you based on your critical understanding of the character you’ve chosen and his/her situation.
4. Include a critique of the theories you choose to apply to the movie character, discussing each theory’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of explaining that person’s situation. Utilize strengths and weaknesses identified by experts such as the authors of your texts. Do NOT use your own opinions or likes/dislikes. This critique can be included in a separate section of the paper or it can be incorporated throughout the paper as you integrate and apply the various theoretical concepts. For example, you may want to use a particular theory’s strengths and weaknesses as a way to segue into the discussion of a different theory. Be specific in your critiques, focusing on the theories’ strengths and weaknesses for understanding this particular client. Avoid a general discussion of pros and cons. The critique should account for approximately 2 pages of the paper.
The point of the assignment is for you to draw on your knowledge of a variety of human behavior theories to construct a “thoughtfully eclectic” understanding of this person’s case. Be specific about how the various theoretical concepts you have chosen are useful in your analysis, supporting your claims with case material. Since this is a theory course (as opposed to a practice or policy course), the paper should focus on a theoretically-based understanding of the person’s development and functioning, not on interventions that might be helpful in working with him/her. The theoretical analysis should be approximately 8-10 pages.
Throughout the paper, provide conceptual and empirical evidence to support your arguments, referencing a minimum of 10 scholarly works, at least 3 of which must be outside materials (i.e., not on the syllabus). The paper should be 12-15 pages in length (not counting references or title page), double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Use citation and referencing styles as specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA style).
The evaluation of the paper will be based on whether you addressed all aspects of the assignment (adequate case description; eclectic theoretical analysis from social work perspective; critique of theories; references), the appropriate use of the theoretical concepts you have chosen and the strength of your analysis, the quality of your written work (organization, flow, clarity, grammar, spelling), and the correct application of APA style.
Papers not received by the deadline will lose half a grade point for each day they are late.
