Consider that any film is in some important ways a reflection of the society in which it is made. At the very least, socially involved citizens know how to watch, and find pleasure in, it. They comprehend it. A film thus speaks to what audiences know how to understand and see.
You have been asked to find two films (ONE MUST BE THE AFRICAN QUEEN-1951), separated by at least forty years. Has our culture changed in that time? Use the essay to do one or the other of these two: (1) make the argument that we are living in a different cultural “space” than we were between 1950 and 1970. You could pinpoint any argument at all, such as that the climate has become more violent, more political, etc. Any argument at all, as long as it is coherent, and well substantiated. Or (2) make the argument that nothing important has changed. Things are fundamentally just as they were, even if they might appear to have changed.
In order to frame either of these arguments, as long as you write about material from both films in some way, and do what you are instructed to do above, you may write on any “topic” or “focus” of your choice.
Two notes. (a) It is quite immaterial which of these arguments you choose. One is not better than the other. Do as you think best. And (b) you would be very well advised not to try to write about any entire film. This is a small paper. Consider focusing intensively, on a sequence, a scene, a conversation, a few shots, whatever seems right to you. The more focused, the better.
