The format for the essay plan is outlined in the course information � under assessment
The essay plan should convey your understanding of the essay question and the approach (arguments, themes and issues) you are going to take.
The essay plan is a scholarly assignment and should be written in full sentences with appropriate referencing
See the essay plan as having 3 parts, that is:
1. Interpretation of the essay � that is, what needs to be addressed in order to answer the question. Here you briefly indicate What you are going to do and Why
2. The structure of your essay � what issues and themes your paper addresses. You should reference these themes and issues. I would generally expect that an essay would identify and examine 5 � 7 main issues. You won�t have space to examine the issues in an essay plan but you should:
� identify the issues you will examine in your essay, and
� demonstrate how they are linked to one another
� reference each issue with specific sources (use the library search engines for this)
3. Reference list � a good essay plan should have a minimum of about 6 � 8 references which are used in the sections above. Here you list with (full bibliographic details) the reference sources your will use in your essay. Singleton, G, Aitkin, D, Jinks, B & Warhurst, J 2013, Australian Political Institutions, 10th edn, Pearson Education Australia, Frenchs Forest MUST BE INCLUDED.
The point of the essay plan is for you to:
Convey your understanding of the essay topic and
Outline the arguments, issues and themes that you intend to examine
Indicate the literature and resources you have identified to support your arguments
The essay plan is NOT a mini essay
You will notice that both essay topics require you to evaluate and consider the merits of statements. There are varying arguments (ie different points of view) in the scholarly literature re these essay topics and a good essay should identify these arguments and critically examine the arguments using a range of quality literature.
