Assignment Requirements

Your task in this assessment is to have a conversation with a professional working in within an industry relevant to your major so someone from LIS, IM, BPM or IT industries. Following the conversation, you are asked to reflect on what occurred during the interview and any insights that were provided by this interaction. The reflection should also include reference to the literature – does the literature support or counter what your interviewee is saying? Not only is this is an opportunity for you to discuss the management topics from this unit with an industry practitioner and learn from their experience, it is also a chance for you to develop your professional networks and talk to potential future employers. As a student you can benefit greatly by having a person with whom you have the confidence to discuss issues and seek to learn outside the boundaries of our lectures and workshops.

Discuss/identify issues – how does your conversation partner deal with them? What management skills/techniques do they employ? How does this relate to the literature? What does the literature say about how to deal with this issue?

Selecting a conversation candidate
It is your responsibility to identify your potential conversation candidates. Your conversation should be with someone who has a management or leadership role in their organization. You can choose a colleague or supervisor in your organization if you are already working in the industry, or you may have other contacts through fellow students, your attendance at professional association or similar professional events. If you are really having difficulty identifying suitable candidates for your interview, teaching staff may be able to provide some leads.

Conducting the conversation
The conversation would likely occupy a minimum of one hour of your time, however this is just a guideline. Remember your conversation candidate will be spending time with you on a voluntary basis and meeting times should be made at their convenience rather than your own. If you wish to record your discussion, make sure you ask permission first.

A small list of questions has been provided to give you inspiration as to the types of questions and topics you might discuss in relation to developing your understanding of the content of INN331. You may like to offer your questions to your candidate ahead of time so that they may be prepared. Your conversation should not be limited to these questions – they are a guide to getting things started or moving only. REMEMBER: It is a conversation – NOT an interview, and you are specifically interested in management – how does your candidate manage issues etc. You may also like to ask your conversation partner about the topic you have chosen for your Assignment 2 and 3.

• What is your role? How long have you been in this role? What positions or experience did you have before becoming a manager?
• What organisation do you work for? What is the relationship between the library/information centre or department and its parent organisation?
• What challenges (personal, team or organisational) do you face in your current role as a manager and what management skills do you employ to address these?
• What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a manager so far?
• What have you learned in your current role?
• What skills and/or qualities do you think managers need to succeed in the current environment?
• What advice would you give a new manager?

There may be occasions where your conversation partner reveals aspects of their own workplace or experiences that they prefer to remain confidential. In these instances, please respect those wishes and reassure your interviewee that they will not be identified. Full disclosure of your conversations is not required for this assessment. If your interviewee wishes to remain anonymous, this is acceptable however you should provide enough background to set the scene and context of the person’s role and responsibilities in your paper. Remember you should ensure your behaviour enhances your future employment opportunities as these industries are not necessarily large.

Writing up your conversation
The conversation report should be 2500 – 3000 words and should be a mixture of reporting the nature of your conversation and critical reflection on what you learned from your discussions, which also includes reference to the literature. The following points can be used to guide your writing.

The conversation (2000 – 2500 words)
• Briefly describe your conversation partner’s role and responsibilities in their professional role. Don’t focus on the job tasks, focus on the management issues.

• A brief description of the person’s experience in management or leadership.
• Discussion regarding some of the management or organisational challenges facing this person’s team/organisation. This is where you can refer to the literature – does what your conversation partner describe about any issues that they face concur with what you have read about the issue, or is it at a variance? Can you comment further on why it may be at a variance? Is this appropriate in that organisation? Why/why not?
• Description of some major challenges for the profession now and/or in the future
• What does it mean to be a manager in the LIS/IM/BPM/IT industry now and in the future?

The reflection (500 words)
• Why did you choose this person to talk to?
• What did you learn from your conversation?
• How has this changed the way you view management in the LIS/IM/BPM/IT profession?
• How will you put into practice what you have learned?
