Assignment 1: Preliminary Statement of the Problem (50 points)
The aims of this assignment are to: (a) identify a focused topic for your work this semester, (b) begin to conceptualize a significant problem to be addressed through your dissertation, and (c) identify three areas of related literatures to review and synthesize. In approximately two pages (double-spaced text), write a preliminary statement of the problem that will be the focus of your dissertation research. Although the statement conveys your thesis or opinion, it is fact-based. Throughout the development of your dissertation, you will continually refine the statement of the problem as your understanding of the issue and what has gone before evolves. Your preliminary statement should:
? Begin with your hypothesis or thesis
? Describe the specific issue to be studied
? Provide clear evidence (i.e., empirical research and data from credible sources) demonstrating the issue is worthy of research
? Explain what needs to be known and why
? End with a simple description of three related literatures that you intend to include in your final paper and how they seem to connect to the your issue
====Searches Executed. For each of the three library databases you search, record the following information. See the sample for the required format.
? Database: List each database that you searched.
? Searches: Number each search; list the keywords used and any limiters that you applied (dates, full text).
? Results: As you execute each search, create a running list of key word combinations and the order in which you used them. Record the number of items generated in parenthesis next to each search so you can report with confidence the depth and breadth of the literature on your topic.
? Peer-Reviewed Reports of Empirical Research: Read the abstracts and cull at least 8-10 articles (per area) that are reports of empirical research published in peer-reviewed journals. They must be germane to your focus area. Pick wisely because these articles will be the ones that you use in your matrices and the narrative syntheses.
? Other Scholarly Works: You should also collect and otherwise note theoretical pieces, reports, and books that are relevant to your topic. You can use these to help you contextualize the research your will review and write-up for your draft Chapter 2. Notably, the reference lists from these kinds of documents can serve as sources of other material.
? Your Literature Database: Download, mark, or otherwise save copies of articles of interest from your search because you will need them for other related assignments, including your dissertation. You can create an excel database or use some other software application for cataloging what you find. There are many examples online.
