Requirements
• Option 1: Select a discipline or subject area that is of interest to you.
• Option 2: Select one subject area (e.g., actions performed, people involved, tools used, products generated) that relates to a professional or personal activity (e.g., cooking, printing, teaching, gardening). Students are encouraged to work in group by selecting different subject areas from the same activity to share resources.
• Select 10 to 15 documents that represent your chosen subject area for a specific user group. Your documents should cover a variety of document types (e.g., books, pamphlets, audiovisual materials, web pages, newspaper articles). Some documents should have broad subject terms and some should have more specific subject terms.
• Select terms that you would use to index these documents. Build your thesaurus by reviewing and organizing these terms (see Step-by-Step Instruction). You may use existing resources (e.g., dictionaries, thesauri, Web directories, encyclopedia) to help decide on the terms and their relationships.
• Your thesaurus should have 15 preferred terms, contain scope notes for 5 terms, and demonstrate hierarchical and associative relationships (BT, NT, RT) and control of synonyms and near synonyms (UF and USE).
Step-by-Step Instruction
1. Select your user group and the subject area for your thesaurus. Be sure to describe your user group at the beginning of the thesaurus.
2. Select 10 or 15 documents (actual books, websites etc.) for your user group on your subject.
3. Select the core terms, i.e. terms you would use to index your documents.
4. Sort the terms into groups or categories.
5. Construct a hierarchy within each category. You may add terms that are not represented by your documents. This will determine BT and NT terms.
6. Keep track of terms that you think are related to authorized terms (you will determine which terms will be used or authorized). These will be RT terms. Related terms do not have to be represented by documents that you have selected.
7. Keep track of synonyms or near synonyms for authorized terms. These will be USED FOR (UF) terms.
8. Make cross references to and from terms that are synonyms for authorized terms using USE and USED FOR (UF).
9. Arrange all authorized terms (in boldface style) and USE terms in alphabetical order.
