1. Critical Analysis
Begin your essay with an introduction to the subject, restating the thesis and the main conclusions . Then write a critique of the argument.You should minimize the use of quoted material (except where necessary to challenge the words used by the scholar), as you should maximize your critique (note that “critique” does not necessarily imply “criticism”) of the author’s argument. Make specific references to what you have learned from the three other CSE sources as you write your Critical Analysis. As relevant, consider the following areas in formulating your own critique:
– How many and what kinds of sources does the author use? Do they contribute to or detract from the argument being made? How does the writer evaluate them? How do you evaluate them?
– What questions are not asked by the author? What areas or perspectives are lacking?
– How much and how well are the author’s claims substantiated with evidence? Are some claims better supported than others; that is, does the author offer more evidence for some claims than for others? Is so, which ones?
– Does the evidence support the stated thesis, or does it actually support some other claim? Is there enough evidence? Strong enough evidence? What evidence is not included? Do you need more proof? What kind?
– How does the author deal with opposing arguments, different points of view, or conflicting evidence? Does the author explain these points of view? Does the author provide a clear rebuttal of an opposing argument; that is, what reason(s) does the author give when explaining why his/her claims are stronger than other scholars’ claims? Does s/he ignore opposing arguments or conflicting evidence (leaving you wondering what others have found), or does s/he treat them inadequately?
– How representative are the examples used in the article to demonstrate main points?
– How adequate is the author’s coverage of the subject? Do you detect faulty assumptions or personal biases, implicit or explicit?
– Overall, how persuasive do you find the author’s argument? Based on your analysis of the argument’s components, how well has the author convinced you that his/her point of view is correct, or at least plausible? If you are not persuaded, what else would the author have to do to convince you? What other kinds of information might you need to fully assess the strength of the author’s argument?
2. Advance your own scholarly position
Finally, you will advance your own scholarly position on the problem/question at hand and articulate, with evidence, why you hold the position that you do. You may state (and re-state) your position throughout the paper as relevant. The important thing is that, after carefully considering the arguments of others, you are able to advance an educated and well-supported position of your own.
