CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
(NOTE: I WILL HAVE THIS SAME DOCUMENT OPENED WHILE I READ AND GRADE YOUR PAPER)
Overview:
1. Answer the following questions in 2 clearly separate parts I, II (500 words). ? This entire assignment?s minimal word count is 500 words. By far, this is the most demanding of your written assignments yet. Follow these instructions carefully.
2. Be sure to answer every question. ? This is for BOTH parts. Thus there are five questions per part corresponding to the five worldview categories; TEN paragraphs required. You may, if you like, have an introductory and concluding paragraph, but these are not required.
3. Meeting the minimum word count as required for each part (I, II) is important. ? Thus 250 per Part minimally.
a. Restating the questions will NOT count for your word count.
b. Direct quotations should be short and limited ? See Writing Rules 1
4. Quotations and material used from other sources should be cited using APA. Remember this includes all in-text citations and Reference List entries (See Writing Rules 1).
5. Check your work for spelling and grammatical errors. ? Writing Rules 3 ? You will be marked down significantly for red, blue and green underlines. I will not be correcting spelling and grammar, just marking you down.
6. Be sure to do your own work, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. ? Writing Rules 1
I. Part One: (at least 250 words)
1. Select ONLY ONE of the worldviews (Secular Humanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam) that have been considered in the course content.
2. Using course content and at least one source outside of the course content, complete the following-
How would the worldview that you selected answer: –
i. The Question of Origin –
ii. The Question of Identity –
iii. The Question of Meaning/Purpose –
iv. The Question of Morality –
v. The Question of Destiny ?
IMPORTANT: USE Consider PAGES 51-63 FOR THE WORLDVIEW QUESTIONS YOU ARE TO ANSWER FOR EACH WORLDVIEW CATEGORY. THE QUESTION OF ORIGIN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGIN OF THE RELIGION OR PHILOSOPHY YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT. If you want to do that, feel free to do so in an optional introductory paragraph. Each of these categories should be discussed in SEPARATE, CLEARLY MARKED PARAGRAPHS.
You MUST use sources to explain what other worldviews/religions/philosophies believe about these questions. Use Consider, The Encyclopedia of Popular Apologetics, the PDF files on World Religions, and other sources outside the course. Just be sure to cite them properly. ? Writing Rules 1. You must have at minimum one documentation per paragraph (thus five) to support your discussion, and two of these, minimally, must be from your assigned study materials.
This is a very important part in that you do not want to misrepresent their beliefs. Be sure you back up statements about their beliefs with documentation (preferably from adherents to that belief). You will receive a point deduction if you are demonstrating that you do not really understand the faith/philosophy you are examining. Avoid stereotypes and strawmen!! Some examples are ?Humanists are moral relativists? or ?The Buddhist belief in Nirvana is the same as the Christian belief in Heaven,? or ?Islam and Christinaity both believe in a divine creation, that just call that creator different names.? Just be sure to read carefully. Pretend like you are teaching someone abou this particular faith/philosophy who knows nothing about it; that approach should help you avoid these errors.
II. Part Two: (at least 250 words)
1. Compare and contrast your selected worldview?s answers (as given in Part One) to a Biblical/Christian worldview. ? In this Part you will make clear comparisons and contrasts with how Christianity and the selected worldview answer the questions under each of the worldview categories. This is not merely a restatement of your worldview assignment (although you may use that), it is a very pointed comparison and contrast. Again, one well marked paragraph per category; thus five in this part also. You must have at least one biblical reference for each paragraph as you go thorugh this comparison and contrast section.
2. Again, be sure to write five distinct paragraphs, one for each worldview category/question to make this comparison and contrast.
i. The Question of Origin –
ii. The Question of Identity –
iii. The Question of Meaning/Purpose –
iv. The Question of Morality –
v. The Question of Destiny ?
You are REQUIRED TO support all your claims from another religion with documentation. If you say ?Buddhism teaches that, . . .?, be sure to have an in-text citation to support the claim, and the proper entry in your Refernce List to document the source.
You are REQUIRED to refer to the Scriptures whenever you make a Christian theological claim. If you say ?The Bible says that . . .? OR ?In Christiainty . . .? be sure to give relevant biblical support to your claim. (Use the Supplement for articulating biblical worldview for adequate biblical support of the Christian worldview if needed ? Refer back to Writing Rules 2 if you need a reminder about how to cite Scripture).
You REQUIRED to have a minimum of three sources, two of which must be your assigned study materials. All references must be cited poroperly (See Writing Rules 1)
