The purpose of this assignment is for you to choose a visual text—either one you have chosen or one I chose for you—and break it down into its essential, component parts to determine how those parts work together to form your interpretation of the work (i.e. you will be analyzing a visual text).
Your critical analysis paper will break down and examine your text’s essential parts using appropriate terms of visual rhetoric. The bulk of your paper will explain how those parts work together to accomplish what you believe the text accomplishes according to your interpretation. You should think of this task as an argument: your interpretation is your position, and your analysis serves as the support for your position.
This sort of paper requires a strong thesis statement containing your interpretation and a carefully organized structure. Because you want your reader to trust your interpretation of the text, you should support that interpretation using the objective “evidence” within the text and not your subjective opinions/assumptions/biases/etc.
You must be able to trace your visual text back to its original context/source for two reasons: because a text’s original context communicates important information about how to analyze and interpret it, and because you must cite your visual text so that your reader can find it for themselves if they wish.
For this assignment, you may either use an advertisement or a film—EITHER MUST BE CLEARED WITH ME FIRST IF YOU DO NOT USE THE OPTIONS I PROVIDE. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING WITHOUT MY APPROVAL.
If you are writing on an advertisement:
– Make sure that your chosen visual text which gives you at least 4 pages worth of support for your interpretation. (That means that even though you could analyze a bumper sticker well, for example, it might not provide you with enough material to work with.) I recommend picking an image which challenges you in some way. If you don’t think the one you have chosen currently does, please inform me if you decide to change.
– Take care to notice that this assignment does not ask you to make an argument about a text’s effects (e.g. “the use of unnaturally thin models in ads contributes to eating disorders in young women”). You are just interpreting the text (e.g. “this ad uses snob appeal to sell beer” or “this ad’s use of attractive models intends to associate sex and Guess brand clothing in the viewer’s mind”) and how it achieves its purposes. You should incorporate some discussion of the three argumentative appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) and how they manifest in your subject matter.
– With the above in mind, be sure to be specific about what you are arguing. For example, this would be a bad thesis: “The advertisement uses color, image, and text in different ways.” This would be a better one: “The Axe advertisement uses sex appeal to sell its product, seen in the manners in which color, image, and text work together.” Or, “Appeals to sexual desire and logical consistency can be seen in the advertisement, created mostly in the images that are represented.”
– Because you must identify the original context in which your text appeared, Google image search and advertising blogs may not be the best resources for finding a visual text for your paper. Be cautious about searching for texts, and make sure you have its citation information before you commit to writing about it.
– YOU MUST INCLUDE OUTSIDE SOURCES. These MUST include at least four scholarly articles discussing the themes or appeals you are interpreting (you will be able to find multiple instances of analysis of love in advertising, fear in advertising, etc.), or analysis of an ad campaign or a company’s advertisements in general.
