Critique of Research Findings Reported in the News (Applicable SLOs A2, D3) Identify a statistic reported in the popular media (e.g., “Nearly one in five atheist scientists with children involve their families with religious institutions, even if they personally do not agree with the institutions’ teachings”). The original source of that statistic should be a research study authored or co-authored by a sociologist and published in an academic journal. Examples of a popular source include the nightly news on network or cable channels or a newspaper article. One way to find a popular source is to go to Google News or some other news outlet such as CNN.com, foxnews.com and so on. Use the search terms “sociologist” “journal” (quotes not needed). The popular news item retrieved should name a sociologist and a journal in which the study was published. If it does not, you will have to search until you find a news item that contains this information. As one example, a search on the CNN website yielded this headline “Study: Some atheists with children attend religious services” The sociologist named in this study was Kristen Schultz Lee of University who published her study in the December 2011 issue of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.
Track down the journal name and the issue that contains the study named in the popular media report. Compare the findings reported by the popular media against the findings reported in academic journal. To make this comparison, answer the following questions in a 1.5 to 2 page double spaced typed paper.
• Clearly state the popular source and statistic of interest as reported by that popular source.
• Clearly state the academic journal from which the media-reported statistic originated and the author or authors who conducted the study.
• Explain in detail how the statistic reported in the popular media was “measured.” For example, how did author(s) determine that someone was an atheist? How did the author(s) determine “involvement with religious institutions? (e.g., Does it mean going to a religious service at least one a year or does it mean something else?). Did the author(s) clearly describe how data for the reported statistic was gathered? As one example: Did the author(s) interview people? If so how many, how did they recruit people to participate? What questions did the author(s) ask? What do you think of the questions?
• What do you think of the way behaviors or attitudes were measured? (e.g., Can you think of a better way to determine whether someone is an atheist? Can you think of a better way to determine “involvement with a religious institution”?)
• Was there any other crucial information that the popular media account left out or distorted about the reported statistic? If yes, explain what is missing. If not, explain your answer
• Clearly identify the original and popular sources in a reference page.
