This assessment item is designed to assess the ability of students to identify a research topic and to justify their selection in the light of the research literature. This item concerns your project identification and rationale, i.e. the discussion and analysis of relevant research literature in order to define the research topic. The item consists of two parts – a discussion paper and a 10-minute seminar presentation to the group that will outline your progress as detailed in your paper. Note that for this item, only the paper will attract an assessment weighting.
The discussion paper should
include a concise statement of the problem/issue you propose to investigate (ensure you demonstrate how your nominated problem/issue meets the criteria for selection set out above);
indicate the significance of this study for educational issues (ensure that you make use of the literature or other documentary evidence in support of your claims) and/or for you in your professional practice;
provide an account of your initial attempts to define, explore and analyse your topic through the research literature; and
include list of bibliographic references used in writing your paper.
You are encouraged to use a research diary throughout the semester to record your thoughts and ideas about your research. Extracts from this diary should be included in the account of the process of defining your research topic.
Your paper should be logically organised and written in an academic style. References should be listed making use of a conventional style. References to assist you are listed in this course profile.
