Select a workplace you are familiar with, discuss the extent to which the expertise required for effective performance is developed in that
workplace and identify the factors that support or hinder that development. In this assignment, you need to discuss the knowledge required for
effective expert work performance in a particular job in the selected workplace (the cognitive view) and also the context and cultural practices
of that particular workplace that either support or inhibit that development. That is, from your knowledge of this workplace and its practices,
identify and evaluate what affordances enhance the development of the expertise required for that job, and also discuss where the absence of
these affordances or other practices inhibits that development.
For this assignment, you should draw on Chapters 2 and 3 of the set textbook for this course, as well as relevant references listed in
?Essential reading? and ?Further reading? at the end of Topic 2 in the Study Guide, along with any other appropriate references you may
find.
Suggested approach
Introduction
(i) State the topic of the assignment;
(ii) Identify the workplace you have chosen (it must be a real workplace, but you don’t have to use its real name);
(iii) Briefly describe the workplace, e.g. what its main purpose is, number and types of employees, etc; and
(iv) Indicate how you will structure the assignment in order to address the topic.
Body
Select an area of work with which you are familiar. The first task is for you to identify and illustrate the kind of job to which you refer and the
learning that is required to become expert in that job – these will be the focus of your analysis. You need to refer to definitions in the literature
in order to discuss what is considered ?expertise? in that job. It may be useful to consider parts of that job that are ?easy to learn? and those
that are acknowledged as being ?hard to learn?. You should identify some examples of the propositional, procedural and dispositional
knowledge required to be learnt in order to be an expert.
Next, using the set textbook (Billett, 2001) and the readings listed at the end of Topic 2 in the Study Guide, discuss how that expertise is
developed in that workplace. As part of this discussion, you could provide specific examples from that workplace of the five characteristics of
expertise listed on pp.64-5 of the set textbook. You could also discuss whether all the workers become ?experts?, and if not, why not. Use
each section to make a key point and illustrate and substantiate that point, using the provided readings and any from your own research.
Conclusion
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the current affordances for developing expertise in your selected workplace, and come to a
conclusion about the importance of developing expertise in that workplace.
