DIALECTIC ESSAY; The basic premise is that you write a series of THESIS – ANTITHESIS arguments. You will argue a side of a discussion and then take up the opposing side and eloquently craft a response. This should not look like the typical childhood debate: “YES. NO. YES. NO.” You should not simply state a side and then write the inverse. Instead, you should invent the most compelling defense of either side. This will require you to think creatively for both sides and not just one. Where students misstep here is in the unfortunate habit of writing weak counterpoints – something stupid that’s easy to rip apart. Right? We’ve all done this. Why that doesn’t work for this essay is that it would essentially mean that HALF of your essay is intentionally stupid… Doesn’t make for a good college paper.
This paper cannot be a summary – you should not simply have a series of points restating and summarizing the scenes that you’ve pulled from the various readings. Instead, you should use what you think is interesting from these readings as a way to launch into a discussion of your own thoughts about the concepts. Where relevant, your Dialectic should mention the readings, but should use the readings more as a resource for a discussion. I’m including an example of a good dialectic essay. Please try to write like that.
