Course Title International Competitiveness and Innovation

Course Aims
The module aims to give students an understanding of the role of innovation in the competitiveness of firms and national economies. This includes an understanding of:

• how firms manage their technologies and develop their organisation for international strategic advantage (the rise of the modern corporation and in-house R&D; new competition and systems integration; networks and alliances for innovation; globalisation and multinationals and innovation).

• what contribution innovation makes to competitiveness and economic growth (long waves and techno-economic paradigms; sectoral patterns of innovation; theories of international trade and technology).

• the role of institutions of finance, management, high-skilled labour, university research, intellectual property and government policies in supporting the innovative capacity of business firms.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, students should be able to:

• identify the given features of countries and industries from the point of view of technological change,

• identify comparative aspects of these countries’ and industries’ patterns of innovative activity,

• identify the way in which national and global frameworks of economic management and technology policy interact, and

• have developed practical skills in essay writing, literature search (including extracting useful material from publications written for non-teaching purposes), group work, and oral work (how to present your work to a small group and initiate and manage discussions).

Employability
The course enhances analytical and synthetic skills through writing of essays and search for material and communication and presentation skills through group presentations, participation in discussions and management of discussions, improving employability.

Methods of Delivery
The course is based on 18 two-hour lectures and 14 one-hour seminars, making a total student/staff contact time of 50 hours, 150 hours of private study and 200 total study hours.

Readings
The lectures and seminars are based on selected readings related to the economics and management of innovation, details of which are given on pages 4 to 9 and 10 to 14 respectively. The book Miozzo, M. and Walsh, V. (2006) International Competitiveness and Technological Change, Oxford: Oxford University Press is referred to as Miozzo and Walsh (2006).

Virtual Learning Environment
The syllabus and the slides for each lecture will be included on the course’s blackboard space.
