For 30 years Mr. Fit has been the proud owner of 5 medium sized grocery stores and a Distribution Center in upstate New York.
In total, he employs about 500 people with a part-time to full-time ratio of 30:70. His employee turnover is low and he attributes that to his wonderful long-term management team, loyal employees, and the terrific benefits he provides: all full time and part-time workers (25 hours/week) receive full medical and dental benefits with no cost to the employee.
Mr. Fit believes in giving back to his people. He has many employees who have worked for him since he opened his first store. To build teamwork he holds quarterly recognition meetings in each store and Distribution Center (DC) where he highlights outstanding team achievement and service for that location. He awards cash, gift certificates, tickets to sporting events, weekend getaways, etc. He really appreciates his people and he demonstrates this publicly as well as one-on-one when he visits the stores.
Mr. Fit just had a policy review and the insurance company has alerted him that 35% of his staff are smokers and therefore, his health benefits costs will increase by 60% beginning next year and continue to increase each year following. The only way he can keep his costs down is if he has a smoker ratio of less than 5%.
Mr. Fit is devastated by this news because business has been down, profits are down, and there is no room to budget for this large of an increase.
