Purpose and Description: To “argue” in the context of this assignment does not mean to simply express a personal opinion. Central to this paper will be a clearly implied or written claim with supporting sub-claims, reasons, and accompanying support. You should be rely on one or more rhetorical devices such as pathos, ethos or logos. As Part 3 of our text Good Reasons indicates, this paper can take many different forms. Once you select a topic and develop a claim, you will need to determine which of these forms your paper will follow. This paper should demonstrate not only an understanding of argument but also demonstrate an understanding of how to incorporate borrowing (paraphrases, quotes and/or summaries) and how to create a Works Cited page as this is a multi-source essay.
Thesis: This paper’s introduction could end with your claim, or you may choose to use an implied or delayed claim as mentioned above. (We can discuss this further in class.)
Length: 3-4 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt., 1” margins
Points for Evaluation: 100 pts. These points will be based on your ability to illustrate the characteristics of argument, use of documentation, use of Standard English, and completeness of assignment.
Point of view: If used selectively, first (I, we, etc.) and second person (you, your) pts. of view can be used in this paper
Documentation and Sources: 3 sources (minimum 2 from library databases; no more than 1 Internet source; Wikipedia can be used as a starting point but should not be used as a source) MLA required; include a Works Cited that lists all sources cited within the paper
