Energy Scenarios Individual (40% for the written report)
You will be asked to develop and present an energy scenario for Alberta in the future to describe Albertas energy system between 2020 and 2030.
You will need to consider what the global energy picture may look like in the future when formulating your vision for Albertas.
There are plenty of resources that you can draw information including Energy Information Administration in the United States and the International Energy Agency.
Many prominent environmental groups have also published various energy scenarios. You will be asked to support your scenario in a written report no more than 5 pages in length (not including attachments).
Overview of Final Term Paper
All forecast scenarios for Alberta from class notes come from the ERCB ST- 98 report and go to 2020. Read the report, or study in class notes!
Will need you to provide your scenario for: 1) Alberta crude oil, 2) Alberta natural gas, 3) Alberta coal and 4) Alberta electricity for the time period between 2020 to 2030+ (using the forecasts to 2020 (and information in class) as a guide/foundation for you).
Hint #1: Decide which of the 4 resources will drive the outcome (forecast) for the other three resources
Example: OilSandswillcontinuetodominateAlbertasenergylandscapeafter2020.Thisis due to the strong potential for Alberta (and Canada) to reach new markets via new pipeline infrastructure. This, in turn, will help drive up demand for natural gas and electricity use in Alberta due to strong economic growth.
Hint #2: How will global trends after 2020 impact your choice in Hint #1?
Example: AccordingtoXXXX,thankstogrowthinAsianPacificeconomiesandastrong rebound in US economic growth, global energy demand (particularly for crude oil) is anticipated to pick up steam after 2020. This will have a profound impact on the demand for Albertas crude oil
Hint #3: Perhaps all 4 of Albertas resources will be driven by other (external) factors and will be independent from one another (will need to justify and defend why).
