This assignment requires you to apply some of the ideas you have studied in the
module so far to a transcription of some real language data. There is no
prescribed structure for your answer but it should include the following:
-your transcription of the data
-a discussion of relevant ideas from E301
-analysis of features in this language data
-a conclusion that summarises your views on the creativity to be found in
everyday language with reference to the data sample.
You should carefully review your study of the module materials so far, including
the set book by Ronald Carter, to select those you feel are most appropriate for
your work on this TMA. You may, draw on material from Units 1-7 where appropriate. Please note that
you are not expected to use everything, but will need to be selective.
For this TMA you will need to demonstrate skills in presenting language data,
through transcribing spoken interaction. Take care to transcribe as exactly as
possible what you hear, and present your data using the transcription conventions
given in Study Guide 1, Unit 3. Your transcription should be provided in an
appendix. You can use short extracts from this in your essay, to help with the
clarity of your writing, rather than expecting your reader to refer to your appendix
each time you use data from it. The full transcription in your appendix is not
included in the word count, but the brief data extracts you include in the body of your TMA will count towards the word limit.
