Many allied health professionals are experiencing supply growth in rural areas of Australia so it is vital to implement recruitment strategies to encourage health professionals in these areas. The Australian health workforce committee have found that there needs to be improved coordination between the government and university sectors regarding university intake levels and also consideration of innovative models of education such as distance learning to provide greater access to rural residents.
Some strategies that the Victoria Government has implemented are the continuing professional development works (CPDWorks), which supports recruitment and retention of allied health professionals through greater access to continuing professional development. It also aims to enhance professional support through delivery of a variety of inter-professional presentations. The Victoria Government also aims to attract health professionals to rural areas by offering a diverse range of clinical experiences, meaningful client relationships, a high level of professional support and the sense of community in these areas.
If I were trying to attract health professionals to rural health practice, I would offer flexible working hours, professional support and mentoring and also explain the advantages of living in a remote area, such as less travel time, escape from pollution, affordable life style and great place for families. Health professionals in rural areas tend to be involved in broader aspects of health such as funding, community development and conducting researching. This can give the health professional great experience and skills to add to their CV.
