The assignments are individual assignments, and all students are required to attempt each
assignment.
When doing your assignments please number your answers, so that the respective question
can be easily identified. If appropriate, do not only give numerical answers, but show the
steps and formulas you have used for your calculations.

Develop a research plan to be submitted for a grant application.
Research Topic: “Risk behaviours (e.g. drug injection, men having sex with men, or similar) and sexually transmitted infection or blood borne viruses in a male prison population”.
The number of marks allocated to each part of the task is noted throughout the assignment.
Task: Write a maximum of five (5) pages of your research plan which should include details on the following topics as appropriate to your chosen study design:
1. Background information & literature review (i.e. write a small literature review, including not
more than eight (8) previously published articles). (2 marks)
2. Operational research hypothesis (i.e. Write down in precise and falsifiable terms your
research hypothesis; include definitions of the study factor and the outcome). (3 marks)
3. The study design (i.e. choose the study design that is most appropriate to address your
research hypothesis; justify your choice by comparing it to other possible designs). (3
marks)
4. Target population (i.e. Define the target population in detail). (2 marks)
5. Sampling process and recruitment strategies (i.e. explain in detail how you plan to sample
from your target population). (3 marks)
6. Data collection method(s) (i.e. explain in detail how you plan to assess study factor and
outcome. How do you plan to assess other characteristics involved, such as confounders?
Are there any follow-up procedures?) (2 marks)
7. Timeframe (i.e. List the specific activities to be undertaken, with specific time frames. This
should include any prior and subsequent parts of the research if applicable) (1 mark)
8. Ethical considerations (i.e. provide a brief statement regarding the ethical implications of
the research). (1 mark)
9. Potential bias (i.e. Discuss potential biases occurring in your study and how you plan to
control them; you can refer to previously outlined design issues). (3 marks)
Planned statistical analysis, sample size calculation, budget, and administration issues need not be covered in your research plan!
However, you should be realistic! For example, assume that you are writing a grant application for NHMRC. NHMRC will fund projects for up to three years and only in exceptional circumstances that need special justification, up to five years. The budget is not limited, but it is certainly very difficult to receive more than $100,000 per year. (Note that NHMRC applications allow 9 pages in total, plus 2 pages references).
