here are some questions were asked by students and Tutor answered them:-
its important to look at them to exactly understand what my tutor demands.

Do I need to produce a literature review?
You need to present a brief introduction to the essay, outlining the scope / tack of the essay. You should then develop a clear rationale for your choice of qualitative design / approach. i.e. you should briefly evaluate what the literature tells us about this problem and qualitative research might better inform us. This should be succinct and based on a brief search of existing qualitative studies in the area you’ve chosen to focus on. It is essential that you read published qualitative studies to be able to do this. You also need to be familiar and reasonably comfortable with the textbook literature. Unless you already have good knowledge, understanding and experience of qualitative research, you should not attempt to start the assessment based purely on attending lectures. So you don’t need to produce a full literature review, but a paragraph or two contextualising the research and forming a rationale for qualitative research.

Should I be producing a research proposal?
You are not being asked to write a full research proposal but to focus on the qualitative methodology and the methods you would use. In other words, you should not be producing a comprehensive literature review, a timeline or Gantt Chart, appendices, of discussing ethical approval issues. You should focus the essay squarely on the items listed in the question: developing a qualitative research question and aim (based on a methodological approach), then discussing the methods of sampling, data collection, data analysis, verification you would use. This means, for example, defining and explaining the sampling method and how you would use it. Each method needs to be defined, explained, rationalised and applied. The test is of your understanding and application, so this should not merely be descriptive (of each method), but an explanatory analysis. The essay is a test of your knowledge and understanding of the qualitative paradigm and of your ability to operationalise a methodology based on an example.

How should I develop a research question?
Firstly you need to read other studies to establish how research questions are written. All research questions have a methodological purpose. In qualitative research they tend to be inductive or exploratory. The goal is subjective (or intersubjective), not objective. It is about producing rich accounts rather than generalised outcomes. The question needs to reflect this philosophical orientation. This does not mean producing a very broad question. On the contrary, it requires focus and faithfulness to a methodology. E.g. a Grounded Theory methodology may have a different goal to an Ethnographic or a Phenomenological methodology. You will need to look at published studies and textbook examples to make better sense of this.

Is a mixed methods approach appropriate?
This would involve quantitative methods, so, no, not for this assignment; this is an essay about qualitative research.
How should I be approaching this essay?
Firstly, it is essential that you feel you have a grasp of what qualitative research is aiming to do. To do this, read the introductions to a number of qualitative research textbooks. Check out definitions and explanations through the various qualitative research online databases. Then delve deeper into a particular approach or methodology. Maybe look at some dissertations available via the UWE Library. Qualitative research tends not to be outcomes focused in the sense of measuring prevalence, incidence, frequencies, comparative differences, likelihood, effectiveness, impact, etc. If you are coming up with a research question or goal along these lines, you should think again and read about how to construct a qualitative research question. In order to prepare the ground for the essay, it is recommended that you search the published journal literature for qualitative research for your chosen topic; this way, you can establish how others have focused their studies and establish a brief rationale for your design – e.g. ‘research evidence suggests that a phenomenological approach would provide insight into the meanings ‘this group’ attaches to their behaviour …’ You need to create a robust rationale for the research design. You should avoid focusing initially on a large general population – qualitative studies are not seeking generalisability and representativeness; rather they seek depth, subjective meanings and cultural relevance. So think carefully about the sample population and why it is the focus. Qualitative research tends to be focused and small scale so you could focus in on a particular subculture, shared experience, case, and this needs to be based on a sound rationale. Try to avoid thinking about numbers and outcomes in the quantitative sense.
