1. Essay. Hence, students must properly reference their sources, include a bibliography, etc.
2. Students must base their responses to the scenario on relevant academic and other literature.
3. All students must address the scenario presented below.
4. The response to the scenario presented as the take home examination should be in the vicinity of 4,000 words.
5. Students MUST NOT write on a type of organization that would be categorized within the same ideological/theological grouping examined in their major essay.
You are an academic working in an Australian university and you have earned a reputation as a leading expert on extremism and terrorism. As a result of your success and insight the Australian Attorney General’s Office has requested that you provide a briefing that will inform them on certain aspects of terrorist and extremist radicalisation. You have been asked to write on what may cause potential radicalisation in Australia coming from a particular ideological grouping (left-wing, right-wing, Islamist, Christian, environmentalist, etc.).
This document will be presented at a conference whose participants include Australia’s leading counter-terrorism specialists, all of whom have academic backgrounds. The conference coordinators have therefore requested that you include full citations and sources of information so that they may then be able to consult your sources for future reference. The briefing you provide them will constitute the basis for a report that they will then present to Australia’s policy makers. They have requested that you are not to make policy recommendations. They will make recommendations based on what you have written in your paper.
They have asked you to address several themes and questions. All are compulsory:
1. The Ideological Grouping: Who they are? What is their history? What are their objectives? What are their grievances? Do they currently exist or have they previously been present in Australia? Are there differences in their global and Australian operations and objectives?
2. The Grouping’s Appeal and Support: To whom would this grouping appeal, and why? How extensive is the grouping’s potential support base in Australia?
3. Radicalisation: How do individuals and organizations become radicalised in general? How have other cells and organizations within this grouping become radicalised? What factors exist in Australia which might facilitate an organization, cell or individual who harbours such ideological affinities to become radicalised? Based on previous examples within the grouping (globally and in Australia), what possibilities exist that this grouping’s radicalisation could lead them to commit violence in Australia and/or overseas?
4. The Significance of the Grouping’s Threat to Australia: Why would the grouping be of concern and a potential threat to Australian national security? How does this compare to other potential terrorist and extremist threats in Australia?
