In the scenario presented below your consulting company has been tasked by the Ministry of Environment to investigate the complaint of pollution discharge. A preliminary investigation team from the Ministry has provided some information. You will need to verify the validity of this information. You have been asked to submit an investigation technical report addressed to the Ministry of Environment that provides an analysis of hypothetical situations that may have caused the incident, and how valid is the complaint. It is expected that you apply principles of mathematical modeling, critical evaluation and ethical judgement. Your report should be as follows (with the structure and headings described below):
? TITLE PAGE( 1 page) : Provide a title of the report as ?Technical Investigation for Complaint into possible?.?. Your name, your title ?Principal Engineer, name of the hypothetical company you work for? and date the report is prepared, student number and Studio no.
? Executive Summary: (Two paragraphs max.) Summarize the goals of the report, what was the process followed, key findings, and conclusions and recommendations. (The Executive Summary accurately captures the whole report and is a synopsis for the reader).
? Back ground information (3 paragraphs or 1 page) Summarize the most important information, listing information relevant to the problem (on the problem itself, disciplinary/subject knowledge, and the process of investigation) including your assessment of its source and credibility. You do not need to restate all information provided in the scenario, but you should describe the information needed for your model, and any important information from other sources. Also describe information that you need to find, and where you would find this. This should include information on the problem, the technical subject, and the process of accident investigations.
? Technical Analysis ( 2 pages): Create a mathematical model to investigate potential causes. Show a labelled figure of the system, input and output variables, any assumptions you made and your calculations. Include the results in graphical or table form as appropriate. Review the conclusions drawn, assess uncertainties or potential errors in your conclusions based on approximations and assumptions made.
? Findings (1 page): Was there a perceived unethical issue ? Provide a critical synopsis of the situation and venture an opinion on any potential unethical issues which may have led to this situation.
? Conclusions and Recommendations (1/2 page ): Based on your model make some preliminary conclusions and recommendations about the validity of the complaint and next steps if any.
? Appendix: Plot the data provided by the inspector as follows: Plot the mean value per day as a function of days over 4 days. Show error bars indicating 95% confidence intervals.
