Please note: this is not an opinion paper or a chance to express yourself. Any conclusions drawn in this essay need to grounded in evidence from the text, that is, you must use citations from Frankl’s work to argue for your interpretation of the value of aesthetics in the prisoners’ lives. Your goal with this essay is to demonstrate to me that you now have the chops to be a decent scholar and critical thinker.

Your final exam for our class is to write a 500 word essay based on your reading of Frankl’s "Experiences in a Concentration Camp" in response to this question:

What is the relationship between aesthetics (the love of beauty) and the survival capacity of prisoners?

This is your culminating essay, where you will demonstrate your grasp of Frankl’s text, your familiarity with his primary concepts, and your ability to argue effectively. This essay is your demonstration of what you’ve learned this semester. Your performance here can mean the difference between a full letter on your final grade.

What are aesthetics, you may ask?

According to Wikipedia,

Aesthetics (also spelled æsthetics or esthetics) is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. It is more scientifically defined as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture, and nature. " Aesthetics is a subdiscipline of axiology, a branch of philosophy and is closely associated with the philosophy of art. Aesthetics studies new ways of seeing and of perceiving the world.

As you can see, just about everyone has a different take on the nature of Humanity’s love of beauty, and we’ve been discussing it for a long, long time! I would put it simply as the awed consciousness of participation in a greater, sublime order of which we are part, but are not the originators.

As the English poet John Keats put it, "Beauty is truth, truth beauty — that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."
I came to understand the value of aesthetics as a young man, sitting up tending a fire through the night in the Mexican desert outside of Real de Catorce, a locale of pilgrimage for the Huichol Indians. As I watched the stars wheeling overhead and felt the subtle pulse of the earth turning through space, I felt cleansed by the elements, harmonized to the deeper life of the cosmos. Toward the morning, I had my own epiphany: I became aware that the passage of the night sky overhead was the archetype of all creative art. It was the primal impulse that gave rise to poetry, mathematics and music — and its beauty was of an order utterly transcending yet inseparable from myself, listening to the coyotes howl in the morning. It was such an incredible gift to know that my little life was rounded about by such beauty!
