1. Aims and objectives
Aims:
– To develop understanding of the application of hard and soft systems methodologies to study of organisations.
– To provide opportunities to apply theories and approaches to organisational contexts, to support the analysis and evaluation of management practice.
• To encourage students to examine their experience and viewpoints, and reflect on alternative organisational viewpoints.
Objectives:
– Develop a 3,000 word individual, written assignment using desk based and secondary research to analyse and evaluate a single live organisation.
– The hand-in date is Friday 6th July 2012 at 12pm.
2. Assignment
The assignment is to demonstrate that you can identify, apply, analyse and evaluate organisational elements, by using a live organisation. The organisation you are to use is Birmingham City Business School (BCBS). As an individual, you are to develop a number of complete frameworks and models to inform your exploration of BCU. These complete diagrams will form part of the assignment, and will be used by you to suggest the present and potential future state of the organisation. As part of this assessment, you are to suggest where improvements could be made for BCBS and make feasible, realistic recommendations. The diagrams and models will be used to underpin your ideas and suggestions.
Use the lecture programme notes as a starting point for your research and undertake additional reading to allow you to further develop the models etc. that you will create.
Each week, the lecture programme developed a theme or views that can be applied to BCBS. As part of this report, there should be inclusion of a complete and detailed ‘Rich Picture’ (single), STEEPLE analysis (on the education market) and SWOT analysis (internal and external factors). For each of these theories, models and concepts you will need to:
– discuss and correctly reference these (possibly in an appendix)
– apply the theories, models and concepts specifically to Birmingham City Business School
– evaluate the theories, models and concepts in relation to the organisation, making recommendations for the Business School to make potential improvements. State and suggest how feasible your recommendations are.
In addition, ensure that:
– the work is double line spaced,
– the total word count of the assignment is stated on the first sheet,
– bullet points are not used. Ensure the factors / areas in the Appendices have sufficient detail to allow you to make coherent recommendations,
– any references used are in Harvard style and are listed on a References page at the end of the work.
