CULTURE AND CUISINE – WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT TWO
Due Wednesday, April 18 – 100 points possible
For Written Assignment Two, you may choose from one of the following types of papers.
1. A cookbook report
2. A research paper on the influence of a specific ethnic group?s migration on the foods of a particular United States region and time period.
This assignment must be submitted to turnitin.com (using the link on WebCampus) by 2:15 pm and a hard copy submitted in class on the day it is due. All papers should be written in paragraph form. They should be a minimum of three and a maximum of seven, double-spaced, typed pages with twelve point font and one inch margins. The following is the general grading scale for all types of written assignments.

15 pts Perfect paper
14 pts Three to five minor spelling or grammar mistakes
13 pts Five to 10 spelling or grammar mistakes

10 pts More than 20 spelling or grammar mistakes
5 pts Spelling, grammar and sentence structure are so poor that it is very difficult to understand the writer?s main points.
In addition, three points will be deducted for improper use of headings, bullet points or numbering, improper spacing or margins, or some improper paragraph structure. Five points will be deducted if paragraph is one, long, run-on paragraph.

Write a report about a prominent cookbook either from the past or the present. It is considered a cookbook rather than a food book if approximately 70% or more of the content is recipes. A summary of the theme of the cookbook 5 points possible
An explanation of how the cookbook is representative of the type of foods / cuisine described and the time period in which it was written. Also discuss how the book relates food and culture topics discussed in class? 20 points possible
An explanation of how the cookbook is organized. For example, are the chapters arranged by types of food items, menu categories, seasons, etc. 15 points possible
A list of at least 10 recipes (with page numbers)that you would like to cook or eat yourself and why you picked those recipes 20 points possible
Your overall critique of the cookbook. Did you like it? Was it informative? Would you recommend it to others? 10 points possible

An explanation of the types of food eaten in the home country and the group?s food habits and meal patterns 15 points possible
An explanation of in what ways they were able to maintain eating those foods and their food habits in the U.S. and what ways these were adapted to their new environment and food products available 20 points possible
An explanation of whether and how the foods were adopted by the general population
15 points possible
