COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Prior to viewing any films the student should read the required text.
1. Students must view 8 films. These films can be any of the movies listed at the end of each chapter in the text. The student MUST choose movies from at least 5 different chapters. EXAMPLE: I Might choose: Chapter 11; The Hunt for Red October. Or you may use a movie mentioned in the readings within the chapters. EXAMPLE: THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, Chapter 12, Page 263.
The student should keep notes on the film while viewing the film. This will aid the student in the remainder of this assignment. The notes that the student takes during the film DO NOT have to be turned in to the instructor.
2. NOTEBOOK: Students are to keep a notebook listing the 8 movies that they have viewed, the chapter and page from the text that the title was found in. Students are to view the movies for specific types of sociological content and include in their notebooks a description of this content. Following, is a list of the sociological areas that are to be looked for in the films: Stratification, Race and Ethnic Relations Issues, Gender Roles, Propaganda, Urban vs. Rural Issues, Deviant vs. Non-Deviant, Age Issues.
Besides viewing the films for sociological content, the student is to view the movie and look for the specific conditions that the text describes. For example if I were viewing a movie discussed in the chapter talking about melodramas, I would look for the conditions that make the film a melodrama and discuss these conditions.
After completion of the film the student is to type, double space with one to one and one half inch margins a discussion of the areas that were identified by the student and the text as being important to the film. EXAMPLE: What role does stratification play in the film script? Are sex roles being
