The purpose of this exercise is to develop an analysis, understanding and design of an overall business work process (‘jobs’). The example will be the main services and underpinning activities related to the core business of a small specialist shop (shoe-shop, wine-shop, pet-shop, cheese-shop, bakery etc) as a system (you are not allowed to use a newsagent, ‘corner-shop’, pharmacy, supermarket, consultancy company or similar – unless you have a specific permission from the unit lecturer). The core business in this case refers to all direct aspects of the core jobs (for example three key jobs that are relevant to the business / main processes) – which includes work having to do with cooking, ordering, organizing products (on shelves etc) and selling or service provision in a specialist shop as a system. You should seek advice from the unit lecturer on your project business ideas. For example to discuss or ‘design’ an ‘EPOS’ system is not acceptable as it is an example of a supporting (technical) system and it is not an example of ‘the’ core business work process (it is also not an example of a Human Activity System).
