For your Speaker Critique you must view President Barack Obama’s inauguration speech, delivered January 21, 2013.
You must use active listening practices to ensure you are not only watching the speech, but also critically analyzing the speech. Keep in mind, critical analysis does not mean to criticize. Critical analysis means to pay close attention in order to try to understand why the speaker is doing what they are doing.
As a political speech, the message clearly has a political goal. As a Democrat, you can expect President Obama’s message to support the ideology of Democrats.
I am not asking you to critique the politics or ideology; I am asking you to critique the speech. That said; you might have to critique the content of the message as part of your overall critique of the speech.
What I don’t want are statements like this, “I didn’t like the speech because the policies were too liberal/conservative for my tastes.”
What I do want is for you to ask yourself a number of questions as you are watching:
Is the speaker clear and articulate?
Is the message clear and easy to understand?
Is the organization and flow of the speech clear and logical?
Are there any contradictions in the content of the speech?
While asking these questions, also ask yourself “How” and/or “Why.”
This is not a complete list of questions you should ask yourself, but some basic questions to get you started.
