Instructions/Guidelines: Foreign-language Film
View one of the following films for a double exercise in ?reading a film? (i.e. reading subtitles unless you are multi-lingual and metaphorically reading the film in terms of general concepts, including some that we?ve studied in this course): Cinema Paradiso, 1988 (155 min.); Kolya, 1996 (105 min.); Life is Beautiful, 1997 (116 min.); Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000 (120 min.); Babette?s Feast, 1987 (102 min.), The Last Emperor, 1987 (163 min.); or Run Lola Run, 1998 (81 min.) or any of the films nominated for an Academy Award (PDF provided) or any of the films listed in the *PBS Parents article on family-friendly foreign films (PDF provided).
*A note on personal taste based on prior experience: If you are easily offended by either profanity or sexuality in film, assess your foreign-language film choice carefully. You can do that by paying attention to ratings, watching the film?s trailer before you acquire it (as a rental or a purchase or on loan from a public library), and reading descriptions and/or reviews of the film.
Background on ?reading? a film:
Some generalized concepts/questions to ask yourself for ?reading a film? (in addition to reading subtitles): What happened in the film? How did the film make you feel? What kinds of cultural values were conveyed through the film? How did the pacing of the film and movement or non-movement of the camera affect your experience? Think about the visual elements ? framing, camera angles, colors, setting, costumes, d?cor, and lighting. Music and sound ? how did the music/sound contribute to the overall mood of the film or your understanding of the characters? How does the dialogue between the characters move the story forward?
Question: Foreign-language film experience
Using a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 as excellent), rate your overall experience of the film that you chose and discuss your reasoning. Provide the proper title of the film and the date of release. Identify the film?s nationality or country of origin. This is a broad rating category. Be creative with your rating. Provide a one- to two-sentence description or summary of the plot, but focus the bulk of your writing/posting on the analysis of your overall experience of the film. Using one or more of the concepts discussed in the preceding ?Background on ?reading? a film,? defend a perspective of yours about the foreign-language film that you viewed. Support your perspective with at least one reference of evidence, i.e. from the assigned readings or perhaps from other course work that you?ve completed in philosophy, sociology, psychology, or another discipline. Begin your posting with a thesis statement and include at least one relevant statement of evidence (a direct quotation or a paraphrase) from any of the assigned readings (or another scholarly source).
