1. Study carefully the models of discourse or theories described in chapter one: functionalists, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Be familiar with their major assumptions, principles and concerns. Be prepared to explain how each might account for a specific social problem, issue or development in the United States today.
2. Be thoroughly familiar with the major research methods (chp.2) of the
social sciences (surveys, experiments, etc.) …….. Be prepared to explain when one method is preferably to another, and to provide or recognize examples of each.
3. Be familiar with the concept of culture (chp. 3) with all of it rich meaning and categories: its components, its significance, it relation to other sociological concepts, in particular, the “linguistic-relativity hypothesis”.
4. Be familiar with the “theories of socialization” as they are presented in the fifth chapter, in particular how each theorist examines and explains the development of the “self”. How do the theorists differ from one another? Why is there conflict around the explanations of the socialization process? Be prepared….
5. In the sixth chapter, be thoroughly familiar with the presentation of the
concept of bureaucracy. Know its characteristics, as identified by Max Weber, its problems as identified by its critics, and its long term patterns as described by Kornblum.
6. In the seventh chapter, be familiar with the various theories explaining criminal or deviant behavior, in particular, any differences between the conflict theoretical view of crime and the functionalist view, in particular, their views on prisons.
You should read carefully the assigned articles in the Timeline which were frequently the subject of forum assignments. I would also reread the global commentaries I sent to everyone who posted responses to the forums.
