PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
As the third step in your sequenced writing project, this assignment asks you to
synthesize four (4) credible and balanced sources by explaining critical
relationships between them, and by discussing how they can help you develop
your issue further. You will put your sources into conversation or negotiation
with each other. The critical relationships will emerge depending upon how you
choose to put them into conversation. In about 1250 words (~ 5 typed pages),
synthesize the following

introduce your research question or issue by using the multimedia source to argue for the need
articulate (in one or more problem statements) how the sources helped you respond to that question
in a new way, i.e., how all sources broadly relate to each other and to your issue
discuss specific critical relationships between the sources and your issue by making analytical
claims (or ?lens? claims); these critical relationships should be more significant than simply
?agree/disagree,? ?pro/con,? or ?support/deny?
provide analysis and examples to develop each ?lens? claim
use transitions to signal movement from one ?lens? claim to the next
conclude by considering a new direction for the issue
ORGANIZATION
Given the major ?moves? required by a Synthesis Paper, the organization of this assignment typically
follows one of two patterns: claim by claim, or source by source. We will discuss these patterns in class.
