Paper #5: Interpreting and Expanding Perspectives on Gender Roles

Choose one of the following essays we read in class:

“The Men We Carry in Our Minds” by Scott Russell Sanders, “Throwing Like a Girl” by James Fallows,
“The Lesbian Bride’s Handbook” by Ariel Levy, “Chivalry on Ice” by Daniel Jones, “My Life as a Housewife” by Rob Jackson, “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” by Camille Paglia, “Why Boys Don’t Play with Dolls” by Katha Pollitt

Find the thesis of the essay (note: it may not be explicitly stated or right at the beginning. Dig around until you find the “essence” of the essay). Analyze the thesis—if you disagree with it, refute it. If you agree with it, use it as the basis for your own argument. Your imagined audience for this essay is someone who has read the same essay you have, but who hasn’t yet made up his or her mind as to what he or she thinks about it.
Guidelines
You must quote the essay you’re analyzing and cite it in MLA format.
You must also quote a secondary essay, either another we’ve read in class or one you’ve found on your own and cite in MLA format.

Points Earned Points
Possible Criterion and Instructor Comments
10 A Relevant Title: Nothing generic (including the title of the essay you’re analyzing)
30 Thesis Identification: You explain the thesis (essence, central point, etc.) of the essay you’ve chosen to analyze.
35 Thesis Statement: Once you’ve explained the thesis of the essay you’re analyzing, you will either a) write a thesis opposing what the author was saying OR b) use the author’s thesis to create your own argument. Your thesis is clear and compelling and it serves as a blueprint for the rest of your essay. It sets up a thoughtful analysis of the subject matter explored in the original essay.
40 Well-supported Analysis: The essay contains 3-4 points that support your thesis. Each point is explored in detail and you incorporate at least three quotes from the original essay and at least one quote from your secondary source.
20 Audience: Your intended audience is familiar with the primary essay you’re analyzing, but has yet to form an opinion about it or its subject matter.
25 MLA Formatting: You cite all outside sources both in-text and in a final works cited page and adhere to all MLA formatting guidelines.
20 Organization and Paragraphs: Your essay is logically sequenced and paragraphs are well-developed. They contain topic sentences and smooth transitions between ideas.
20 Grammar, Punctuation, & Style: Your essay is free of distracting errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
