For 2012 you will be submitting a written assignment as part of your continuous assessment. For 2012, every student will write an assignment on a tunnel, dam, bridge, or pipeline somewhere in the world. We will assign the topics randomly – you cannot choose. There may be some duplication of topics depending on final student numbers. Your assignment is to research and write about your designated subject following these guidelines.
Here are you assignment guidelines.
1. Assignment to be no more than 10 single-sided, double-spaced pages. A reference list should be included, but IS NOT part of the 10-page limit. Your assignment is therefore 10 single-sided, double-spaced pages plus your reference list page(s). Figures should be included at an appropriate size where needed, but MUST be within the 10-page body of the report.
2. Minimum font size is 10-point font.
3. References should be included with the text and in a reference list at the end of the document, following the standard Harvard referencing system. If you don’t know what this is, look it up for yourself.
4. All figures should have detailed captions and appropriate references.
5. Your assignment should include the following sections: a. Introduction – One to two paragraphs
b. Geological setting – one quarter to one third of total report
c. Major problems encountered – one quarter to one third of total report
d. Remedial measures taken } – D and E together to constitute one quarter
e. Lessons learned } to one third of total report
6. PLEASE DO NOT BIND YOUR ASSIGNMENT OR USE FANCY FOLDERS. – these are not necessary and often waste our time. Your entire assignment should be simply stapled at the top left hand corner, with a faculty cover page attached to the front. Make sure your name and student number appear on all pages.
Failure to follow these guidelines, especially relating to page length, font size and spacing, will result in penalties to your report mark. This report is worth 15% of your overall mark for the unit.
