We begin by looking at Germany. No country has seen the kind of ups and downs in the 20th century than the German nation. In the post-war period, the economy of West Germany boomed into a “Wirtschaftswunder” wonder economy. East Germany, on the other hand, struggled with economic hardship.
With the fall of the Soviet Union, Germany became one country again. East Germany was subsumed by West Germany, and the country united as a singular economy and singular people.
We next look at Korea. Korea is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich nations in the world. Yet it remains the most divided. What Germany was before reunification, Korea is ten times over.
At the end of World War II, Korea was divided into North and South. South Korea became a capitalist and effectively democratic society. North Korea became a classical Stalinist state. The people remain the same. The Korean people have five thousand years of history that cannot be eliminated by modern political ideology. But they remain divided just the same.
Can Korea be unified the same way Germany was unified?
We want to try, in this introductory module, to understand what has worked and what has not worked. As we move through our study of other areas of the world, areas that are struggling with stark divisions, we will try to take the lessons we learn here and apply them elsewhere.
