Getting started
In the following subsections, some key databanks websites will be given.
Resources for economists
RFE: Resources for economists on the internet. Website: http://www.rfe.org/index.php
International data sources
World Economic Outlook Database:

General guidelines
Complete four out of four questions for full credit.
The assigned marks are shown in brackets by the questions.
For each question clearly indicate the source of your data. If you are providing a Table or a Figure, clearly state the data source within the caption.
Use the APA guidelines for general formatting. For free tutorials click the following link http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx
The main text of the project (excluding reference list and appendices) should be between 400 to 500 words.
A soft copy must be uploaded to the Turnitin.
The project is to be submitted in a hard and soft copy (including Turnitin Report in word format. i.e Doc, Docx).
Plagiarism will be punished to the full extent of university policy.
Question 1, [25% of the total mark]: GDP
Get the latest data for each of the following variables for France (Nominal GDP (current $ prices)
Real GDP (Y) (constant $ prices)
Consumption (C) (private final consumption expenditure, or household expenditure)
Investment (I) (Gross capital formation)
Government purchases (G) (General government final consumption expenditure)
Exports (X)
Imports (M)
Confirm that Y=C+I+G+NX (the equality will not hold exactly because of statistical discrepancies)
Based on the data obtained, draw a bar graph showing the percentage shares of C, I, G and NX in the GDP.
What component has the biggest share in GDP? What do you think this is the case?
Question 2, [25% of the total mark]: Price indices in Egypt
Get data for the consumer price index (CPI) and the GDP deflator (use the chain-type price index for GDP) in the following years: 1972, 1973, and 1974.
Compute the inflation rate between 1972 and 1973 and between 1973 and 1974 using the CPI.
Compute the inflation rate between 1972 and 1973 and between 1973 and 1974 using the GDP Deflator.
In late 1973, OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) tripled the price of oil. How can this fact explain the difference in inflation rate between the years 1973 and 1974 using the CPI method vs. the Deflator method?
Question 3, [25% of the total mark]: Measuring growth rate of real GDP per person
For Kuwait, find real GDP for the following years: 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010.
For Kuwait, find total population for the following years: 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010.
For Kuwait, compute real GDP per capita for the following years: 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010.
For Kuwait, compute the rate of growth of real GDP per capita for the following periods: 1980-1990, 1990-2000 and 2000-2010.
Based on your calculations, in which decade did Kuwait GDP per capita grow fastest? The slowest?
Question 4, [25% of the total mark]: Economic growth vs. Population growth
The American economist Robert Solow argued that countries that have higher population growth will have lower income per capita compared with lower population growth. For each of the 20 countries listed below, find the most recent data on (i) the level of income per person and (ii) the population growth rate.
Present your data in a Table.
Using a spreadsheet software like Excel, use the scatter diagram to plot the data points. In your graph, population growth should be on the x-axis and the level of income should be on the y-axis. You should include a trend line in your graph to show the general relationship between population growth and income per person. Does the data support the Solow conclusion?
