Information about me:
– My disability: I was born deaf. At the age of three, I wore hearing aids and signed language. Hearing aids didn’t work well, so I got a surgery at the age of four, so I could wear cochlear implant (an electronic hearing device). After getting my cochlear implant, I had years of intensive speech therapy training in order to speak and hear properly. Now I can hear and speak well.
– I was a cashier at Loblaws Superstore while I was living in Edmonton (temporarily – was visiting my dad) for a year. I moved back to Ottawa and worked in the art school. I volunteered as an art instructor at a retirement home for 2 years. I also volunteered to tutor a young deaf boy with a cochlear implant for a short while before he moved away. I am now taking Concept Arts program at a college (I love drawing since I was a little girl), so I can become a Concept Artist. I hope to give back to my speech therapists and everyone else who helped me become the way I am today one day. I hope to help every deaf children and adults out there and let them know that they can be whoever they want to be if they set their mind to.
