This assignment is designed to allow the student to further examine the life, times, legacy, and historical value of a certain historical personality. It is also designed to allow the student the opportunity to practice his/her research skills and writing abilities.
Instructions:
Each student will be assigned a historical personality to research. Students MAY NOT trade, swap, or request changes to their historical personality. Anyone doing so will fail the assignment.
The essay is due March 10, by 3 p.m. Late work will not be accepted for any reason. It will be submitted to turnitin.com. The instructor will grade it using the Grademark feature of turnitin.com and will return the paper in this fashion.
Requirements:
The paper will have the following requirements:
�Be at least 3 pages (When I say 3 pages, I mean 3 double-spaced, 12-point font pages of text.)
�Be Double-spaced and use Times New Roman 12 pt font.
�Cite at least 4 academically approved sources using footnotes and the Chicago Manual of Style�
o1 source MUST BE the Textbook
o1 source must be another book (NO ENCYCLOPEDIA)
o1 source must be an academic journal
oThe rest of the sources maybe web pages, books, or other sources. All must be academically acceptable.
For a source to be academically acceptable, it must be either 1) produced by an academic press, or
2) be printed in an acceptable journal, or
3) be vetted by an academic community, or
4) be published on a website that has a .edu domain suffix. Sites such as Wikipedia, Ask.com, Yahoo Answers, or any other �non-academic� site will not be accepted. Any paper attempting to cite those sources will face a 100 point deduction.
As a biography, this paper will have some unique aspects. You are required to find out as much as you can about your assigned person�s life and what they did. Your paper must include the following:
� An overview of the person�s life, including their family, their career, their social status, situation surrounding their death, etc.
� A description of what they did at the time.
� An explanation of what they did that at the time that made them famous. And how those actions were perceived at the time. In other words, did their neighbors and contemporaries recognize them as important?
� How the person is remembered today. Why do we remember them for something in particular? Does the person deserve more credit or less from history?
