In part because doing reconstruction from raw data usually requires you to be familiar with languages you are reconstructing. So doing original research in historical linguistics is harder than in phonology or syntax. Below are some ideas about feasible paper topics for this class. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list ? I encourage you to think about topics that interest you. If not sure, discuss your topics with me individually, in person or by email.
The best (and usually the only) way to get started on any of these is to go to the library and read what others have written about the topic that interests you. Sometimes you will need to consult hefty manuals on histories of language, dictionaries, and other reference resources. Historical linguistics is more library intensive than phonology or syntax; you need to be a little bit of a book worm to do it.
? Compare European and Canadian French and identify some features that are innovative and conservative in each dialect, in phonology or syntax. For instance, one area to look at might be vowel length. Some varieties of Qu?b?cois French are said to retain old vowel distinctions that were eliminated in the Standard European dialect, though this is controversial.
? Look at features present either in North American English or in Canadian French that are also found in non-standard regional dialects in the UK or France. Discuss evidence this gives for migrations into the New World.
? Compare Canadian dialects and Cajun French and discuss linguistic evidence for migrations of French speakers North America.
? Identify features present in non-standard varieties of national languages that are conservative compared to the standard.
? Discuss evidence for and against various proposals about the location of the Indo-European homeland, or the homeland of any other linguistic group.
? Discuss recent studies on sound change in progress and the evidence they provide for or against the neogrammarian hypothesis on the regularity of sound change.
? Discuss evidence for or against the relationship of any New World language with any Old World language.
? Discuss evidence for or against other long-distance comparisons, such as between Indo-European and Finno-Ugric, or between Indo-European and Semitic, the Nostratic hypothesis, or reconstructions of ancestors of North American languages.
