Project Three: Gender/Ability (Researched Argument)

How are gender and/or (dis)ability explored as important topics in American Studies, in the films listed below? And as fictional, cinematic stories, do they present clear, well-explained arguments for their supposed themes and important central ideas? What are they? Do you find them to be persuasive, entertaining, and thought-provoking? Do the stories successfully explore their implications and complications through storylines, characters, and controversial issues? How? And as a final question, why? What do you think is the reasoning behind presenting such stories on film, and do you think there is a subversive, rebellious streak underlying the supposed themes and storylines of the works? In other words, what do you think are the implications of presenting for display on film a pretty and glamorous woman? She’s also not terribly bright – or is she? What about her brunette (and assumedly more intelligent) counterpart? Physically different people presented as circus freaks out for revenge, or thoughtful, quiet types, suspicious of making new friends in a strange place? Choosing from within these possible writing and research areas will lead you to a rich and challenging topic to explore further for your final researched argument paper.

You can use any combination of these films as simply creative inspiration for your project, or write and research about any of them in particular. It’s your choice, but choose wisely, with your writing and learning process in mind. The most element is that you are interested in pursuing the research project, as you’ll be living closely with the topic you choose for several weeks. For now to begin writing, focus solely on developing your own ideas and forming a central argument you’d like to explore further. As we proceed on work toward your workshop and then final portfolio draft, you’ll be working on a research question and further exploring your topic through secondary source material.
FIRST DRAFT:
Review your invention writing for the project, and choose references that relate to ideas you’re developing thus far. Then, choose specific references that can further support and explain the argument you are making in your writing (choosing several from each primary source is a good place to start). Note by page number references you choose from texts, and incorporate into your writing using the following methods: quotation, summary, and paraphrase. Information from sources should complement your own ideas about the topics covered, not overshadow them! Any information you use must be cited in MLA format, both for in-text citations, as well as included in Works Cited. As you complete your draft, work toward a central thesis for your arguments.
