Examples might be a carpenter, attorney, auto mechanic, registered nurse, dentist, physician, secretary, etc. Granted, the specifics of those jobs (and most others) can vary widely but if one says the title, most people have would have a basic understanding of what the job means. But what if I tell someone I am a public health administrator? Would they know what I do?
You may have already noted that your text is entitled "Principles of Public Health Practice." You should note that it doesn’t necessarily focus on administration or leadership when discussing a topic. Thus, as you move forward in this course, I would like you to try to view the topics in the lectures/text from the point of the public health administrator or leader rather than from the point of the public health practitioner.
For this week’s discussion, please address one of the following:
1. Given the history of public health, how has the field of public health administration evolved? In other words, how does the role of the public health administrator of today differ from the role of the public health administrator in the past (25, 50, 75, years ago, etc.)? Write a paragraph that compares the role of a public health administrator today with an example from the past.
SAMPLE ANSWER (DO NOT COPY)
The role of today’s public health administrator is more challenging when compared to that of the public administrator in the eighteenth century, because a tremendous complexity has been introduced through politicking. The social justice as an emblem of the public health system is the right of the people to good health; and it is harder to administer in a political arena. Today’s public health administration has curvature that has also added to its complexity. It is complicated by the multi-facet administration of the community health system, the general community system, and the health care services. This constitutes a challenge of overlapping role; first with the medical field in its health care services; secondly, with the political field in its responsibility towards the general community; and lastly with the international field in its activities within the global health system. For example the public health administrator who is working as a government employee in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), could be a physician who serves as liaison with the American Medical Association; who is also a board member of the Community Preventive Services projects, and who is equally responsible to coordinate the international public health initiatives. The focus of the eighteenth century public health administrator was mainly on the eradication of infected food items at the ports, in order to protect the country from the importation of epidemic diseases.
