My final deadline is 10th Sept 2012, but I will require a draft to be worked out by 6th Aug 2012. The draft is for my school tutor to review my progress and provide me with feedback (ideally the introduction and methods should be finished and started writing with results and discussion).
This dissertation should be a substantial piece of work totalling 5000-6000 words, plus appendices. It should be a 25-30 page document, word processed in 12 point font size, double spaced, left margin 3.5cm, right margin 1.25cm, top and bottom margins 1.25cm. A penalty will be applied to dissertations that are 10% more or less than the word limit.
The format should be generally along the following lines:
1. Title Page
2. Abstract:
Not exceeding 250 words it must summarise all sections of your dissertation. Thus, try to condense your introductory/ background information into one or two summarising paragraphs, your body text (results/discussion) into another couple of paragraphs, and your conclusion should provide a pithy final sentence.
3. Contents:
Page numbers of different sections; should show how logically organised your dissertation is going to be to the reader! Make sure you have a good structure.
4. Introduction:
This is a comprehensive introduction to the background of the subject, including historical aspects. It should be well referenced, so that it is completely objective. The Introduction written for the Research Protocol should not be reproduced verbatim, but should be re-written and expanded
5. Aims:
The aim(s) of the dissertation should be clearly set out, up to a maximum of three major aims. Within each aim, you may have several objectives to achieve before completing the overall aim.
6. Methods:
You will need to provide a section outlining how you have carried out the research. What sources of information you have used and how data have been presented. Where used, exclusion/inclusion criteria should be defined. A detailed description of any statistical analyses should also be included in this section.
7. Results/Discussion:
This section will be the main part of the dissertation. Here the dissertations may vary. The results and discussion sections may be produced in separate sections. Or, they may be combined. In either case, summarised results are produced in numbered
Tables, Figures or Graphs. Detailed results should be placed in appendices at the end of the dissertation. Clear sections (or chapters) must be presented logically and placed in context within the whole dissertation. You must make a critical appraisal of your results and demonstrate that you have achieved your aim(s).
8. Conclusion:
This will draw together the major issues of your dissertation and set out the conclusions from your analyses. Obviously, you should have met your aims and objectives as stated at the end of your introduction!
9. References:
These should be reported using either the Harvard or Vancouver style of reporting (but not both).
