Instructions for Completing Homework Assignments
PLEASE PRINT (OR HAVE AVAILABLE IN SOME WAY) THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE COMPLETING ANY ASSIGNMENT!
If you follow these instructions, you should be able to complete the homework assignments and submit them on Blackboard without any problems.

Both assignments can be completed long before their due date, including the first week of the term.

Begin with Homework #1. DO NOT click on the orange Homework #1 link unless you are ready to submit your answers.

1. Copy and paste into a writing program (e.g. Microsoft Word) (or write down) the questions listed as they appear UNDER the orange link to “Homework #1” on the “Homework” page. You are doing this so you are able to answer them while NOT in the Blackboard window. This will safeguard you from being disconnected while completing the assignment.

2. Now log out of Blackboard. You are doing this so that you do not bog down Blackboard when you really don’t have to be in Blackboard.

3. Take your time and type your answers into your writing program. All of the questions are simply designed to encourage you to think critically about certain topics related to sexuality and therefore, there is no right or wrong answer. You will be graded on the amount of effort that you put into answering those questions. Therefore a one or two-sentence answer will NOT be sufficient. Typically, a paragraph is enough when answering each question (not each assignment). Please run a spell and grammar check, use complete sentences, and save your work. You will lose points for spelling/grammatical errors as well as incomplete sentences as those things make the responses very difficult to read.

4. After you have answered the questions to your satisfaction, remove the actual questions themselves, leaving only your NUMBERED answers. For example, what you submit for Homework #1 would look like this:
1a. The first time I remember being treated differently because I am female/male/transgendered/intersex was when . . .
1b. At the time, I felt . . . I was thinking . . .
2. If I had to share a dorm room with someone of a different sex . . .

and so on.

DO NOT include any introductory information like your name, ID#, or class name.

5. Now you are ready to submit your answers. Log back in to Blackboard, select the “homework” link and click on the orange “Homework #1” link. You will get a prompt stating ?Click begin to begin: Homework #1. Click Cancel to go back.?

6. Click “Begin.” You will now get a window with the heading ?Preview Test: Homework #1.?

7. Scroll down the window past the questions and you will find a box with a toolbar at the bottom. This box is where you are going to be pasting your answers.

8. Now go back to your answers in your writing program and copy them. Be SURE you copy ALL of your answers!

9. Now go back to Blackboard and paste your answers in the box.

10. If you forgot to run a spell check in your writing program, you can now do that by clicking on the “abc” icon on the lower right of the box to run a spell check.

11. When you are sure that you are ready to submit your answers, click on “save and submit.” DO NOT just select ?save all answers.? If you do select ?save all answers? you also HAVE TO select ?save submit? in order to complete the process. You will then get a prompt asking, “Confirm assessment submission.”

12. Click “OK.” You will then receive a message indicating that your test was submitted successfully. You may want to write down the date and time listed next to “submitted.” You can then select ?OK? to review results. The most important thing to look for is that next to ?Status? it should say ?Needs grading?. Once you see that, you can click on ?OK? and it will take you back to the homework screen.

Simply repeat steps 1-12 to complete the second homework assignment.

If you are having problems, e-mail the GTA immediately. If you are having problems and the deadline is looming, email YOUR RESPONSES to the GTA.

After Completing the Homework
I highly recommend that, after you submit your answers, you click on the “My Grades” tab to be sure something was posted. Every term, I have a number of students who do not complete the submission process correctly. They think they submitted something when, in fact, nothing was submitted, and the due date had passed. If you do this, you will not get any credit nor will you have the opportunity to resubmit your answers if the deadline has passed. You have been warned. It is your responsibility to follow the instructions and complete the assignment correctly.

When looking at the ?My Grades? tab, if you posted something successfully, a green “!” will be displayed for that particular assignment. If you didn’t submit anything, a “-” will appear. If a pencil and paper symbol or a red ?!? appears, that means that something went wrong in the submission process and you did NOT successfully complete the assignment. This can happen if you simply ?save? your work, but do not ?submit? your work. If this happens, you can just go back in and complete the assignment again, but if not, contact the GTA to help you.

At some point, probably 3 weeks after each assignment is due, you will be able to check your scores on Blackboard. If you submit your assignment early, you will not find a grade early – as grading doesn’t begin until each assignment’s due date has passed. If it hasn’t been graded yet, the “!” will still appear for that particular assignment. If it has been graded, then the points you received will be displayed.

If you receive a score less than the total possible, the reason(s) will be listed in the “Comments” column at the “My Grades” tab.

Homework #1
Directions: Each question (there are 7) has a 3-sentence response minimum. Failure to follow these instructions will lead to a reduction in possible points.

1a. Complete this sentence: “The first time I remember being treated differently because I am female/male/transgendered/intersex was when?”

1b. What were your thoughts or feelings about that experience at that time?

2. Decades ago co-ed residence halls were non-existent. Now, some colleges have co-ed rooms within co-ed residence halls. How comfortable would you feel sharing a dorm room with someone of a different sex? Explain your response.

3. Imagine you are a parent. At what age would you discuss the concepts of heterosexuality and homosexuality with your child(ren)? Why that age? Explain your response.

For questions 4 & 5, think of someone you know well who is over 65 years of age. (Note: If you can?t think of ANYONE, e-mail Liz and she?ll give you some suggestions. If you think of someone whom you believe is no longer sexually active, these questions will be hard to complete, meaning you will lose points.)

4a. Who is the person and what is her/his relationship to you? (PLEASE NO NAMES! A descriptor will do, such as “my former coach”, “my next door neighbor”, “my grandfather”, etc.)

4b. Do you think this person is sexually active? Explain your response

5. How do you feel when you entertain the idea that this person is “sexually active”? Explain your response. (You don’t need to picture this in your head; rather simply try to acknowledge that they engage in sexual activity.)
