This is what you will find in the Instructions PDF attached:
You have been assigned two readings that focus on the topic of an inmate’s adjustment to being in prison. You will note that the authors have conducted markedly different research methods, in order to address this topic. Tying in very closely with our discussions of Chapter 7 and 8 of the Bachman and Schutt text.
Your submitted paper should be double spaced and 3-4 pages in length. You do not need to provide a reference or bibliography page, unless you are including material from outside these two readings. If you do, this will not count against your page limit.
Use standard margins (1 inch around) on your paper with an 11 or 12 point font.
In an essay format (not bullet points) answer the following questions for each article separately:
1. What do you think is the research question that drives the current study?
2. What would you argue is the major hypothesis that your author(s) present?
3. What type of research method is your author employing in the current study? (Be specific as to the discussions from Chapters 7 and 8).
4. Are there any validity issues with the current article? If so, use the language of Bachman and Schutt to explain them.
5. Are there any concerns about generalizability with these articles? Explain.
In an essay format (not bullet points) answer the following questions by comparing across the two articles:
1. Do your authors seem to share a common ‘measure’ of Adjustment to Prison? Do they seem to be thinking about it in the same way?
2. Do you feel that one of your authors does a better job than the other in conducting their research?
Helpful Notes:
1. Keep direct quotes (passages from the text) to a minimum, ideally there should be none in your paper at all. I’ve read the articles, I know what they say, I want to hear what you have to say.
2. Finally, try to see the application of what the authors intended here. In both cases they are addressing an important topic, although there may be some debate as to how well they addressed them and the circumstances that surround their participation in research.
3. These articles are a bit longer than the last set, in particular the Schmid and Jones article. However, it is a qualitative article, and you will find little mention of statistical analysis in the article. The Dhami et al article does include a quantitative analysis of a survey. I will provide a narrated PowerPoint to talk folks through the statistical analysis portion of the article.
